Entire Madibeng department suspended after more than R300 000 fraudulent payment

“The acting municipal manager of Madibeng Local Municipality, Energy Manaka, suspended five people in the creditors unit  after he established that a payment of R376 428 was fraudulently paid to a particular company,” said Madibeng spokesperson Charity Khunou.

Manaka said: “As the acting municipal manager, I would like to warn all municipal employees to refrain from any form of misconduct, either directly or indirectly. I am stating this without any intention to threaten anyone, but to caution those who are involved in such activities that the consequences of such acts will be catastrophic. It is not worth it.”

Employees allegedly changed the banking details of a company who legitimately worked for the municipality and the money was paid into another bank account.

“The banking details of the rightful company were tampered with, professionally so, and this resulted in payment to another company known by the municipality,” Khunou said.

Manaka said after having interviewed everyone involved in the process, he found it necessary to suspend all personnel in the expenditure unit.

“This will allow a swift and thorough investigation into the matter. It is my intent that the investigation must be completed within seven days so as to avoid prejudicing innocent personnel. Whoever is incriminated will be dealt with accordingly, but I can certainly assure you that it is not going to be nice, the culprits will hate the day they engaged in such criminal activities” Manaka said.

The acting municipal manager has undertaken to update the public about the progress and outcome of the investigation.
