Learning through fun

In the Giraffe and Bunny classes, Sandra Arraiol and Sally van Wyk  embrace the guidelines of the Independent Schools Association of South Africa (ISASA) curriculum, but has opted to incorporate these guidelines as part of an emergent curriculum in order to ensure that the imagination and curiosity of the children within its care are developed.

“This type of approach ensures that the materials we present to the children cover the required skills, remain relevant, appeal to the child’s interest and can be adapted as required. This is turn ensures that the way we present information or ideas to the children remains dynamic, fresh and exciting and ensures their active participation,” explains HOD Sandra.

The educational approach that is incorporated is the Italian Reggio Emilia, which views children as curious, competent, ambitious, creative and capable individuals who ultimately are in control of their own learning. They therefore require a nurturing, dynamic, enriched and supportive environment, in which purposeful play takes place and where the children are reconnected with nature and encouraged to explore and discover.

“It is the educator’s role to nurture and guide the children, to listen to what they have to offer, include them in the decision-making process and ultimately foster in the child, a love of nature and life-long learning.” As the Mountain Cambridge School is a Thinking School, thinking skills are already introduced at this level via the Edward de Bono thinking hats, using mind maps and Habits of the Mind.

The formal school day stretches from 08:00 to 12:30 for the Bunnies, and 08:00 to 13:00 for the Giraffes, but the teachers are there from 07:00 to 14:00 every day. Activities that are included in the curriculum include Monkeynastix, music appreciation, physical education, and Manners4Minors.
