A 6 m Zuma for North West

A tender for the design, manufacture and installation of the statue and plaque has just been put out by the treasury department.

The sculpture is seemingly to be erected along the N4 in Groot Marico.

Artists have until 24 February to submit a tender for this project.

According to artists Kormorant spoke to, casting of the statue in bronze will cost anything between R500 000 and a million rand, with at least a further million for the artist. According to the North West DA leader, Joe McGluwa, the ANC in North West wants to spend R6 million on the statue.

He said the DA was shocked that the ANC wants to take R6 million of public money to erect a statue of “a man who has so brazenly broken the laws of our land, and who seeks to divide the people of this country rather than unite us.”

“Once again, this statue project shows that North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo and his government put Jacob Zuma and the ANC ahead of the people of the North West. In the province with the highest unemployment rate in South Africa, at a shocking 44,6%, it is simply unconscionable that Supra could spend public money on a multi-million rand statue, rather than spend money on creating jobs and opportunities.”

Lion’s Head in Cape Town boasted with a Zuma statue in 2015, but it was demolished soon after it appeared at this prime tourist attraction. The small statue featured a naked Zuma with a sword, resembling a dildo, in his hand.

Artists will have to pay a non-refundable fee of R350 cash for tender documents.
