Workers armed with pangas invade Madibeng offices

Madibeng municipal staff gather outside the municipal building on Tuesday morning after a group of people, armed with pangas and knives, invaded the building.

According to eyewitnesses, around 50 people entered the building forcefully at 08:30, creating pandemonium and panic causing municipal workers to vacate the building.

“The people claimed Madibeng has not paid suppliers they were working for since December with the result that they in turn had not been paid,” said councillor Theo Modiha, who was in the building at the time of the invasion. “They demanded to see the municipal manager and the municipal staff evacuated the building. The police and security officers responded to get the situation under control.”

According to information, the group met with relevant officials (not the municipal manager) and an agreement was reached.

“We have addressed the council and leadership repeatedly about revenue collection and wise spending that will enable the municipality to pay suppliers. We have warned them that something like this was going to happen. But they do not listen. We have been expecting action like this,” Modiha said.

Kormorant has asked the municipality for comment on the incident and what the outcome of the meeting with the suppliers was, but has not received a reply.
