Dangerous criminals escape in Brits

Police in Brits are searching for four dangerous awaiting trial prisoners after they escaped from a police van on its way to take them to the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Chris Sithole (24), Alfonzo Mpofu (25), Gibson Msimango (25), all from Zimbabwe, and Ontse Lebese (27) from Ga-Rankuwa escaped from the police vehicle on their way from the Mogwase prison to Brits. They were in the vehicle with four other suspects.

“According to information a motorist saw the escape and alerted the police. When the police stopped the vehicle they discovered that the four had escaped,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi.

Sithole and Mpofu stand trial for four counts of rape, murder and robbery. Msimango and Lebese were both arrested for house robbery cases.

“The investigation into their escape is underway. “

Hlati said the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane has expressed her unhappiness with the incident. She said that no stone will be left unturned to get to the core of the escape.

“Any member who is found to be responsible or who has neglected his or her duty will be held accountable and be dealt with according to the necessary prescript of the law,” said Lt Gen Motswenyane.
