Kudu takes vehicle’s roof off near Hartbeespoort

Manus Pieters said the one moment he was still driving on the R400 Hartbeeshoek Road extension and the next the roof of his car was ripped off. He said he barely saw the kudu that landed about 70 m from the vehicle.

“The poor thing did not even have time to jump away,” he said. Pieters miraculously only sustained scratches.

Pieters has been travelling the 96 km from his house in Krugersdorp to the Lonmin mine in Rustenburg for the past seven years and has never encountered a kudu close to Hartbeespoort.

“I am so used to travelling this road daily that I know where to decrease speed where there may possibly be animals, but the kudu totally surprised me.”

According to Pieters one of the eye witnesses fetched the carcass to slaughter. He said the man promised to give him the horns to remind him how lucky he was.
