Owen Knapton, an 11-year-old cyclist from Laerskool Generaal Hendrik Schoeman Primary School took part in the Gauteng Regional under 13 cycling road championships on Sunday 19 January in Benoni. The 11-year-old Team Computer Smith member took the second place at the under 13 road championships.
Despite being 11, Owen conquered the 30km road race, giving him a position which will see him race at the SA’s in July where he hopes to bring back the winning SA jersey. Although he rides mountain bikes and takes part in Spur MTB series and other events, his true love is road biking. Owen does not only cycle for podium spots, he has a drive to create awareness about diabetes, cancer and auto-immune deficiency as he has spent many years fighting this with his dad, who according to him is his favourite riding partner.
His passion for cycling sees the 11-year-old cyclist training every morning at 04:00 before school and taking part in long bike rides during weekends with his adult teammates.
