A stream of sewage is running through the grounds of the Meerhof School for disabled children, damming up on the adjacent Meerhof Oewer.
The school has been suffering from municipal sewage overflow from pump stations periodically but the constant stream along the school’s sportsfield has been flowing for months. The origin is unknown to the school.
“It has become a very real health hazard and some of the children already suffer from a compromised immune system. When the pump station on the school property overflows, sewage dams up right to the classrooms,” a teacher said. The school had to dig furrows and install grids around the classrooms to prevent the sewage running into classrooms.
Workers from the Madibeng municipality were on the scene on Monday to work on the pump station on the property. The municipality has been requested to look into the sewage stream running to the Meerhof Oewer but has not responded by the time of going to press.
