Staff and patients at Hartbeespoort recovery centre tested for Covid-19 after former patient tests positive

Staff members and patients at the Beethoven Recovery Centre in Hartbeespoort have been tested for the Covid-19 virus this weekend after a patient who was recently discharged, tested positive last week.

“The patient from another province was discharged last week and he informed us on Friday that he had tested positive for the virus,” said Henri Gastrow, director and manager of the centre. He said the patient had been at the centre for more than two weeks.

“Since Friday, 54 staff members and patients have been tested and all the results came back negative. More patients and staff will be tested on Monday,” he said.

Gastrow said the centre had implemented strict measures even before the lockdown. “We received guidelines from the relevant authorities before lockdown and it was immediately implemented. No visitors were allowed and all staff and patients were screened regularly. However, screening tools can only do so much, a person infected with the Covid-19 virus may show no symptoms.”

He said the centre adhered strictly to the regulations and limited contact between everyone in the centre. “We have been proactive from the starts and the results so far are encouraging.
