Three people were highjacked and one murdered during a robbery spree on the Lanseria Road in Hartbeespoort on Tuesday, 9 June.
In three different incidents over a period of five hours on the same road , three robbers in a white Volkswagen Golf, overpowered motorists when they stopped along the road, abducted them and tied them to a tree in bushes nearby. One of the victims was strangled and then stoned to death in front of the other two victims.
“The incidents occurred between 10:30 and 15:30 on the R512 in the Broederstroom area. During the first incident, the victim in a Mahindra company vehicle stopped along the road. A white Volkswagen Golf appeared and stopped in front of his car. One of the occupants of the Golf allegedly got out and covered the man’s face with a cloth. He was forced into the Volkswagen Golf and driven to nearby bushes where he was tied to a tree,” said police spokesperson, Maria Nkabinde.
The robbers robbed him of his cellphone, bank card and cash and left him there.
A few hours later a worker from a nearby chicken farm in a black GMW bakkie was hijacked when he stopped to pick up a pedestrian. “The same white Golf appeared and the occupants forced him to lie down in his car and they drove him to the same bushes,” Nkabinde said. He was also tied up with the first victim and the robbers took cash from him. They again left the two men.
“During the third incident an unknown man who was presumably also hijacked, was brought to where the other two victims were. According to the two men, he retaliated and was strangled and stoned to death in front of them.”
The robbers fled with the Mahindra and the GWM bakkie. The GWM was later recovered.
The police are investigating if the murdered man was hijacked, and if so what vehicle he drove.
The suspects are still at large.
