Two weeks after a six-week-old baby was kidnapped at a supermarket in Brits, police found the baby with a 53-year-old woman in Oukasie on Tuesday.
Baby Ofentse Kutumela was abducted on 20 July around 16:40 when his mother, Suzan (19) left the baby in the care of the 53-year-old woman outside Shoprite in Murray Avenue while she went inside to buy food.
When she came out of the shop, the woman and baby Ofentse were gone.
Police have been searching for Ofentse the past two weeks. “On Tuesday the baby’s father received an anonymous call regarding the whereabouts of baby Ofentse. He immediately alerted the police and members of the Brits Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit acted swiftly. Upon arrival at a residential place in Siyahlala section in Oukasie about 13:30, police found the baby who was positively identified and reunited with the parents unharmed,” said police spokesperson, Maria Nkabinde.
The 53-year-old woman was arrested and appeared in the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday on a kidnapping charge.
The District Commissioner of police in the Brits cluster, Major General Modisagaarekwe Mosimanegape thanked members of the community for sharing valuable information which led to finding the missing baby.
