Local runners are dusting off their running shoes for the virtual SPAR Women’s Challenge race on 26 September.
With the entire SPAR Women’s Challenge series for 2020 having been cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic, SPAR has organised a virtual challenge and women around South Africa are being invited to spread a little sunshine by entering the challenge.
A number of Hartbeespoort and Brits women have already indicated that they will take part in this annual race, this time virtually! So far 15 Hartbeespoort Marathon Club runners have entered, among them even a couple of men. They will be wearing little tutus for the occasion!
On 26 September, people who have entered can run, jog, walk, skip or even dance their own challenge at their own pace, choosing their own route and completing their challenge at any time between six in the morning and six at night. They then share their experience on social media, using the hashtags #BeSunshine or #SPARVirtualChallenge. The organisers are hoping to set a world record with 30 000 entries for the women’s virtual challenge.
Women of all ages can take part. “2020 was meant to be a year of celebration, as we marked 30 years of our involvement in women’s road running,” said Spar Group Marketing Executive Mike Prentice. “We know that thousands of women look forward to taking part in the Spar Women’s Challenge races and their associated Fun Runs each year, and so we have decided to run a virtual challenge to give women something to look forward to and a motive to exercise.”
The entry fee is R50 and for every entry, Spar will donate a food parcel to a gender-based violence (GBV) survivor. “We at SPAR want to do something to help the survivors, and all the money received from entry fees will be used to help them,” he said.
For the entry fee of only R50, each entrant will receive a challenge t-shirt, a buff and challenge magazine. Entering the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge is easy – enter online at www.sparvirtualchallenge.co.za.
Participants can collect their challenge packs at their chosen SPAR store from two weeks before the virtual challenge or delivered by courier at a nominal extra fee.
The Hartbeespoort Marathon Club runners who will participate so far are Antoinette Hartslief, Lani Hartmann, Ina Nolte, Marilize du Plessis, Wilma du Plooy, Adelle Wentzel, Christo Wentzel, Werner Nagel, Irene Small, Philippa Parry, Angela de Gouveia, Joanne Rabe, Rudi Rabe, Inge Cox, Yolande du Plessis and Ronel du Plessis. The runners in Hartbeespoort will kick off from the Hartbeespoort Marathon Clubhouse for the virtual race.
