Planned blasting works on N4

The Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire has warned that blasting on the N4 at the Brits interchange will be taking place up until 26 August.

During the Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire’s current upgrade and work on the 32 km of a second carriageway on the N4 between the M17 and R512 (Brits Interchange), the construction contractor has encountered large rocks/boulders in the area between the R511 and R512 on the N4 which have proved challenging to remove. As a result, a series of blasting has been planned for Wednesdays and some Saturdays in order to remove the rock so they can proceed with the construction of the eastern carriageway.

The planned dates for the blasting are 05, 08, 12, 19, 22 and 26 August between 14:00 and 16:00. During these times, the N4 will be closed for a period of 15 minutes to ensure the safety of road users in both directions. Traffic travelling westwards on the N4 will be stopped underneath or just east of the R511/N4 interchange. Traffic on the R511 that intends to travel westward will be redirected and the on-ramp on the westbound carriageway will be closed. Traffic travelling eastbound on the N4 will be stopped at 14km after the R512.

Bakwena’s commercial manager, Solomon Kganyago, says safety of motorists using the N1N4 route is a priority and we would like to thank the motoring public for their patience whilst we undertake these blasts. He said the current 32km second carriageway upgrade will not only improve motorists safety on the route but also enhance motorists driving experience. The expected completion date is June 2021.
