Three in court for Brits liquor store robbery

Three suspects who were caught during an attempted armed robbery at a liquor store in Brits last week, have appeared in the Brits Magistrates’ Court on charges of business robbery. A fourth suspect, who was shot on the scene, is still under police guard in hospital.

Sibonelo Ntuli (23), Curtis Mokoena (35) and Sello Serama (40) were remanded in custody and are expected to re-appear before the same court on Wednesday, 7 October 2020.

“The suspects were apprehended on Wednesday, 23 September 2020 when the police reacted swiftly after being alerted about a business robbery in Carel de Wet Street in Brits. According to information available at this stage, it is alleged that five suspects stormed a local liquor outlet at about 08:00. A 29-year-old man was inside the liquor outlet when he heard his father screaming for help downstairs. When he went to investigate, he saw four men assaulting his father. He activated the panic button. A fifth suspect accompanied his father upstairs and the father jumped out of the window,” said police spokesperson, Maria Nkabinde.

The security company and police arrived on the scene and the robbers shot at a security vehicle. Security officers allegedly returned fire and one of the suspects was hit. The police arrested two suspects on the scene and one fled in a silver VW Polo but was intercepted by members of Brits Cluster Technical Response Team (TRT) at the Alpha Crossing. One suspect got away on foot.
