A 33-year-old man from Letlhabile near Brits was sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of minors.
Johannes Toi Joubert was sentenced by the Brits Regional Court on Wednesday, 30 September 2020 for the rape of a number of children in Letlhabile between May 2014 and October 2015.
Joubert targeted minor victims between the ages of 8 and 16. “The accused hid and waited for unsuspecting school children in the bushy and secluded areas of Maboloka Village. He would then grab and verbally threatened the children before raping them,” said police spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh. Following intensive investigation, the accused was linked through forensic evidence with three cases that were reported between May 2014 and October 2015. He was found not guilty on two counts of rape.”
The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, welcomed the life sentence handed down to Joubert and praised the investigating officer, Sergeant Boitumelo Rakabe from the Brits Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) Unit, for her thorough work which led to Joubert’s conviction and sentence.
