Three people have been hijacked in Hartbeespoort the past week and the Hartbeespoort community policing forum warns motorists to avoid stopping along roads in the area.
A motorist in a Chevy Spark was hijacked on the R560 on Thursday, 5 November, after he stopped to pick up hitchhikers. “One grabbed him around the neck and attempted to strangle him. They searched him and took two cellphones, cash and clothes and dropped him off along the road before fleeing with his car,” said Romano van der Spuy, chairman of the Hartbeespoort community policing forum.
On Tuesday, 10 November, two motorists were hijacked near the Randburg bridge and on the R512 in Broederstroom respectively.
A motorist stopped on the R512 around 08:00 after four people standing at a Volkswagen Polo along the road pointed at his vehicle, indicating that something was wrong. The four approached him and overpowered him before dragging him into nearby bushes. He was tied up with shoelaces and the robbers took his bank card and forced him to give the pin before driving off in his silver Volkswagen vehicle.
Another motorist was hijacked around 10:00 on the R560 at Randburg bridge after stopping to avoid hitting a pedestrian in the middle of the road who seemed to need help. As soon as he stopped, more men appeared from the bushes, grabbed him and dragged him into the bush. He was tied up with his belt and forced to give his bank card’s pin. They fled with his white Mitsubishi. Money was later withdrawn and goods bought with his card.
