Police, nature conservation clamp down on illegal gillnet fisherman

The Hartbeespoort police and Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) clamped down on illegal gillnet fishing on Wednesday morning during a raid on the Hartbeespoort Dam.

Approximately 20 illegal fisherman were arrested, 12 canoes and a large number of gillnets and fish confiscated. Fish caught in the gillnets that were still alive, were freed and let go. The raid forms part of the department’s initiative to address the illegal fishing activities and to establish solutions to combat it.
