A 20-year-old man was arrested after allegedly stabbing a man to death at a tavern in Moonooi.
Gift Ngakane (20) is accused of stabbing Thabo Malahlela (20) repeatedly on Sunday, 6 December. He is also accused of stabbing a friend of the victim who tried to help him.
“According to information available at this stage, Malahlela and other patrons were drinking at a local tavern around 04:00 on Sunday. when an altercation ensued between two groups.
The suspect, who arrived after the situation was diffused, allegedly stabbed Malahlela in the face with a knife. Malahlela ran away and Ngakane followed him to a house where he stabbed him in the back. The victim collapsed but managed to get up and walked back to the tavern. His friends came to his assistance and one was allegedly also stabbed by the suspect. Both Malahlela and his friend were then transported to the Bapong clinic where Malahlela was certified dead upon arrival. His friend was admitted at a local hospital for medical treatment,” said police spokesperson, Maria Nkabinde.
The Mooinooi police arrested Ngakane on Sunday night. He appeared in the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 8 December 2020, on charges of murder and attempted murder. He was remanded in custody until his next appearance on Monday, 12 December.
Meanwhile, the owner of the tavern was arrested and released upon paying a fine for contravention of the Liquor Act (Act 27 of 1989) and the Disaster Management Act (Act 57 of 2002), for the sale and dispensing of liquor not adhering to trading and curfew hours.
