SIU investigates R190 million Madibeng fleet

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is investigating the Madibeng Local Municipality for an illegally awarded tender of R190 million for a fleet of vehicles, the unit confirmed this week.

“The investigation is about the procurement of or contracting of goods, works or services by, or on behalf of the municipality and payments made in respect thereof,” said SIU spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago. “It is also about any undisclosed or unauthorised interests which the personnel of the municipality or the state may have had in contractors, suppliers or service providers bidding for work or doing business with the municipality or to whom contracts were awarded by the municipality.” The SIU will also investigate any unlawful or improper conduct by the personnel of the municipality or the applicable contractors, suppliers or service providers.

Kganyago said the SIU cannot disclose the name of the municipal official who awarded the tender as the investigation is ongoing. They are currently only investigating the R190 million fleet that is believed to have been illegally awarded.
