A 29-year-old woman from Sunway in Hartbeespoort was arrested on Wednesday for the gruesome murder of her newborn baby after she killed the baby by dumping the newborn in boiling water.
According police spokesperson, Colonel Amanda Funani, the mother gave birth at her house in Sunway on Friday, 12 March. “It is alleged that the suspect placed the newborn baby in boiling water, then wrapped the baby in plastic and buried him, or her, in a shallow grave at a nearby field.”
Funani said the mother later told a friend what she had done and the friend alerted the police. Police found the body of the baby, buried in a shallow grave. The police have not yet determined the baby’s gender because of the body’s condition. The woman was arrested in Sunway on Wednesday, 17 March, and charged with murder. She appears in the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 19 March.
“The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, thanked the suspect’s friend for speaking out and working with the police in ensuring that the suspect was arrested for the horrendous crime. He requested community members to continue working with the police in order to protect the most vulnerable in society.”
