Burglar shot after grabbing police weapon

An alleged burglar was shot near Brits after he grabbed a police firearm and pointed it at police officers who were questioning him and an accomplice.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh, police were called out to Jericho near Brits on Sunday, 14 March, after two suspects had allegedly broken into a house and were hiding in a shack. “The police members found two men inside the shack. The men were interviewed by the officers and a scuffle ensued. One of the suspects grabbed a police firearm and pointed it at the police. One of the police officers fired a shot towards the armed suspect,” she said. The suspects fled but were apprehended and arrested. The wounded man was taken to hospital where he is under police guard.

33-year-old Kagiso Zaphiro Mothibe, appeared in the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 16 March 2021, on charges of housebreaking and business burglary and will remain in custody until his next court appearance on Thursday, 25 March 2021. “The second suspect will be charged as soon as he is released from hospital.”

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, applauded the police members for their vigilance and bravery that resulted in the arrest. He condemned the attack on the police officials and said it will not be tolerated as it is regarded as an attack on the State.
