Pecanwood College High School has appointed a new principal. Former deputy principal, Melaine Nainar, will now head the high school.
Melaine started at Pecanwood College in January 2010 as the Head of the GET Phase, managing the Academics and Pastoral portfolios. Since then she has worked her way up to the Deputy Principal – Academics with her area of speciality being Mathematics.
Before joining Pecanwood College, Melaine was the Academic Head for the Grade nine department, as well as the Head of House at The Kings College.
In her tenure as Acting Head at Pecanwood College, Melaine was instrumental in rolling out the RDI Programme and made instrumental changes within the boarding house.
“I am a goal-orientated person and it was my goal to become principal. It has been a process and I am looking forward to my new role,” she says.
She believes strongly in Pecanwood College’s motto: Prepare for life. “I believe in leading by example. It is important for a teacher to encourage learners to be who they are. We have to embrace, respect and encourage diversity. A teacher has to show respect to a child. Respect is earned and it is important for learners to know they are respected. It is okay to make a mistake, as long as you learn from it. There is always a second chance,” she says.
She loves interaction with her learners and her new role as principal will allow her to take this to a higher level. “I have an open-door policy. Every child needs a safe space and I want my office to be that space for the learners. I want to lead with integrity and honesty and nurture honest and open relationships with the learners.”
Melaine, her husband and two daughters have lived in Hartbeespoort since 2013 and they enjoy the beauty of the area. “It is a place where children can still engage with nature, like we did, growing up. It is a lovely place to live and work.”
