The elderly residents of the Clearview Retirement Lodge in Broederstroom were recently surprised by a visit from Hartbeespoort police members accompanied by the police’s mounted unit, and their delight at this unusual visit, was clearly visible.
“The police are mandated by the constitution of the country to create a safe and secure environment for senior citizens and with this in mind, police members spent some time to talk to the elderly and introduce them to the horses,” said police spokesperson, Maria Nkabinde.
“Our residents were delighted and some of them were very emotional. We would like the police and mounted unit to visit us again soon. It meant so much for our elderly residents,” said Mara van Staden, owner of the retirement village.
For 95-year-old Bev Foley, the visit brought back fond memories of her time on horseback. She was an enthusiastic horse rider many years ago and belonged to a riding school. Most of the residents interacted with the horses that seem to enjoy the loving attention.
