Girl (13) strangled and robbed at gunpoint in Brits

Ribbok Street in Elandsrand, Brits

A 13-year-old girl was held at gunpoint, strangled and then robbed of her phone in Brits on Thursday afternoon.

Tebogo Dhlomo and two friends were in the street outside her home in Ribbok Street in Elandsrand when an armed robber came from behind them and demanded their phones. “Tebogo’s two friends did not have their phones and when she tried to hide hers, the man pulled out a firearm, grabbed her and strangled her, forcing her to hand over her phone,” Tebogo’s mother, Lebogang, told Kormorant.
A white Volkswagen Polo with another suspect was parked nearby and after taking her phone, the armed robber jumped into the car and the two suspects drove away. “Tebogo could see that it was a GP number plate and one of the numbers on the plate was 2.”
Members of the Afriforun neighbourhood watch immediately searched the area for the vehicle but could not find it. The police were called to the scene.
“Tebogo is very traumatised. Our children are not safe in the streets anymore. Children should also be made aware that their phones attract criminals. These days kids live on their phones and they should stop walking around with the phones for all to see,” Tebogo said.
