Four arrested for illegal weapons, attempted murder and copper theft

Four men were arrested near Brits on Thursday for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, theft of copper cable, tampering with essential infrastructure and attempted murder.

Lewis Ngonyama (35), Tshabalala Makhashane (24), Paulos Mashaba (20) and Johannes Mahlangu (19) were arrested in De Kroon after the police received information about men in possession of a firearm at the De Kroon squatter camp. “Upon arrival at the accused’s homes, police discovered a hunting rifle with ammunition, .38 special revolver ammunition, two truck batteries, a large solar panel, bolt cutters and approximately 144 kg of copper cable worth R100 000,’ said police spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh. ” Further investigation linked the four to an incident where a man, responding to copper cable theft at Hernic Mine on Monday evening, was shot at.

The four suspects appeared in the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Monday and were remanded in custody. The accused, who were all found to be undocumented foreign nationals, are expected to reappear at the same court soon for formal bail application. Investigation into the matter continues.
