Traffic demerit system implemented in July

The AARTO (Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act) will be implemented nationally from 1 July 2021.

Every driver starts with zero demerit points on his/her driving licence, and if 15 demerit points are accumulated, the driving licence will be suspended for 3 months, according to the AARTO Amendment Act.
A driving licence may only be suspended twice after which it will be cancelled.

Here is a summary of some of the main fines and demerit points:
Vehicle not licenced – 3 points and R1 000 fine
Driver licence not in vehicle – 1 point and R500 fine
Driver not licenced – 4 points and R1 250 fine
Vehicle with no number plates – 6 points and court appearance
Exceeding speed limit – 1 – 6 points and fines between R250 and court appearance
Driving under the influence of alcohol – 6 points and court appearance
Failing to stop after an accident – 6 points and court appearance
Failing to keep to the left side of the road – 3 points and R1 000 fine
