World-renowned Hartbeespoort artist Tienie Pritchard (83) sadly passed away on Friday, 6 August, due to COVID-19 complications.
Tienie was diagnosed with the virus a week before and was hospitalised in the Netcare Akasia on Thursday night. He died hours later.
“It was all so sudden. We have taken extra special care of him since the pandemic started to prevent him from getting exposed to the virus because of his lung problems, but then he did get it. We are devastated,” his wife Elna told Kormorant. Elna is currently also recuperating from COVID-19 at their Hartbeespoort home. Their daughter Milla has also tested positive.
Tienie has been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been on oxygen for a while before he tested positive for COVID-19.
“After he was diagnosed, we were hopeful that he would make it, but on Thursday night he was in severe pain and struggled to breathe. He was taken to hospital by ambulance and was placed on a ventilator. He passed away in the early morning hours on Friday. It is such a shock. We still thought we were going to be able to manage it, but then he was just gone.”
He has been cremated, and as soon as the family is well, his ashes will be scattered at a location he has requested.
Pritchard was one of the most prominent sculptors in South Africa and was known for his monumental public commissions, nationally as well as internationally.
