Hartbeespoort’s well-loved personality and community policing forum chairman, Romano van der Spuy this week expressed his gratitude to the community for all the well-wishes and support he has received since his heart attack and quadruple bypass heart surgery last month.
“I am overwhelmed by the community’s response,” an emotional Romano said this week.
After spending three weeks in hospital and undergoing an operation on 20 September, he is now recuperating at home. He will celebrate his 75th birthday on Saturday, 16 October.
“I cannot express my gratitude enough for all the love shown to me. I did not know so many people cared. Thank you to every single person who has contacted me and all the wonderful support I have received. Some people even cried when they heard I was alive,” he laughs.
“I am still weak but getting better by the day. I am able to walk around my garden and appreciate spring and all the new growth. To be honest, I did not think I was going to make it at one stage, but with God’s mercy, I am alive and I am determined be back on my feet soon.”
He was planning a big birthday bash for his big 75 but it will have to be moved to November. “I will celebrate life in the Waterberg with friends and family. I am grateful to be alive and for all the people who care.”
For the Steve Biko Hospital and the caring nursing staff, he only has praise. “They looked after me so well and I received the best care.”
He promises to be back in the community soon. “All I can say is thank you for the love!”
