A newborn baby, with the umbilical cord still attached, was found dumped on the N4 highway near De Wildt on Wednesday morning.
A motorist on the N4 noticed a suspicious-looking bag in the road and pulled over to investigate. “Part of the umbilical cord was protruding from the bag and the motorist then saw that it was a baby,” said police spokesperson, Constable Lindiwe Mdluli.
The Akaksia police were alerted and upon arrival contacted emergency services. “They declared the baby boy dead. It is suspected that the baby died of unnatural causes,” she said.
A case of concealment of birth was opened.
“The suspect responsible for this barbaric act is unknown and the police request anyone with information to contact the Akasia police on 012 564 0700 or Crime Stop on 0860 010 111.”
