Your friendly neighbourhood bakery

Exclusive muffins, great coffee and delicious bread… a new coffee shop cum bakery, opened its doors at the Harties Mall recently and its offerings are worth a visit and many returns.

Baker Dorah Masege and Carly Goetsch

Confection Connection, with its bright and cheery interior and feel at home atmosphere is the enterprise of the Hartbeespoort Goetsch family that has been in the hospitality trade for decades. They are supplying muffin mixes to hotels, airlines and the likes, but suffering repeated blows during lockdown the past two years, decided to put their eggs in more than one basket.

“There was a period that we could not trade for six months, so we had to start thinking of alternatives and the idea of a bakery and coffee shop was born,” says Carly, who runs the business with her parents, Howard and Caroline.

“Obviously our speciality is exclusive as a result of our experience in the hospitality trade, and of course delicious,” she laughs. All their muffins are made with a sweet potato mix – a strange combination one would think – but the result is mouthwatering.

“Sweet potato is a wonderful food source. It is a natural preservative and the muffin mix can be frozen for up to three months. It keeps the muffins moist and contains natural sugar. Our muffin mixes contain no additives or preservatives. It is a decadent health product!

The most mouthwatering is probably their flagship double chocolate muffin with a ganache centre, a must to try.
The bakery also specialises in delicatessen bread such as banana loaf, carrot bread, Kitta loaf and a health loaf full of goodness. And of course croissants, baguettes, bagels, ciabatta and rye bread.

“Our whole aim is to become your friendly family neighbourhood bakery. We believe in the personal touch, and we make an effort to get to know our clients who become friends,” she says.

The coffee shop and bakery have a homely feel – for instance, no fancy industrial fridges, just your ordinary household fridge and your own kitchen feel. “We wanted clients to feel at home.”

The next step is baking days for adults and kids. “The idea is to bring back the love of baking. “We will be offering baking classes for kids in November where they can press their own dough, watch the cookies rise in the oven and decorate to their hearts’ delight. This is the first step to involve the community.”

And for busy moms, there is a variety of ready to go mixes that they can prepare at home with the minimum work. And if you have a special request, Carly and her team will bake it for you.

“We want to know what the clients would like to see on our shelves and we will welcome all suggestions.”
