Hartbeespoort police thwart armed robbers

Hartbeespoort police thwarted fleeing armed robbers when they intercepted and arrested them at a shopping centre in Hartbeespoort on Thursday.

The hijacked car the armed robbers were driving.

According to police spokesperson, Maria Nkabinde, the three robbers were on the run after robbing a business at a mall in Bapong earlier.

Alert members of the Hartbeespoort police’s crime prevention unit were on the lookout for the robbers’ vehicle when they spotted it at Sediba Plaza around 12:00. Brits police, who were also on the lookout for the robbers joined them.

The robbers fled into shops at the centre with the police members in pursuit. Two were caught where they were hiding in the shops. A third allegedly got away.

Police investigations revealed that the Volvo the robbers were driving, was allegedly hijacked in Pretoria earlier this month. Cellular phones, robbed from a store at the mall in Bapong earlier, were also recovered from the suspects.

“Investigation into the matter continues and more suspects who were involved in the business robbery are expected to be arrested,” she said.

The two suspects, aged 19 and 28, will appear in the Brits Magistrates’ Court on charges of possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle and property.
