“Do not give us money, implement projects yourselves,” the newly elected mayor of the Madibeng municipality told mines last week during a mining forum meeting where the mines discussed their social labour plans.
The newly elected Executive Mayor, Douglas Maimane advised mining companies to develop a model for implementation of projects that would in the main leave the mine as the only implementers of the projects.
The mining companies in attendance included Sibanye Stillwaters, Samancor, Eastplats, Northam Eland and Bushveld Vametco.
“We need the mining companies to partner with us in our efforts to eradicate poverty, to address the issue of unemployment, training of our youth and infrastructure development and business opportunities. It is through engagements like these that we will find each other and to achieve common goal of this transformation agenda,” Miamane said.
During the meeting, the mining companies briefed the mayor about the progress and challenges relating to implementation of their individual social labour plans. Maimane emphasised the need for strong relations between the municipality and the mining companies in pursuit of transformation in different sectors in Madibeng.
He praised the mining companies for the work done in the municipality through the social labour plans programmes which include infrastructure/facility development and local economic development initiatives.
