Pecanwood is now an international golfing destination with the Pecanwood Classic making its debut this week as a co-sanctioned tournament between the Sunshine Tour and European Tour at the Pecanwood Golf & Country Club. It kicks off on 10 to 13 March.
The new tournament will feature a prize fund of $1.5 million and the field of 156 professionals will be split between Sunshine Tour and European Tour golfers competing at South Africa’s first Jack Nicklaus signature golf course.
“We’re delighted to welcome Pecanwood Golf & Country Club as the home of the new Pecanwood Classic on our Tour. As South Africa’s first Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, Pecanwood set a new benchmark for golf courses in South Africa when it opened, and we are extremely pleased to finally bring a major international Sunshine Tour and European Tour tournament to its fairways,” said Thomas Abt, commissioner of the Sunshine Tour.
Since its official opening in 1996, the Pecanwood golf course has welcomed several amateur and professional tournaments to its fairways on the banks of the spectacular Hartbeespoort Dam and within an hour’s drive of both Pretoria and Johannesburg. The Pecanwood Classic is a milestone in the golf course’s history.
Morné Botha, General Manager of the Pecanwood Estate said they are extremely excited about the Pecanwood Classic. “It will showcase the Pecanwood Estate’s status as one of South Africa’s first and still leading golf estates. We have been working for two years to host a professional golf event at our facility. At the end of November I received a call from the Sunshine Tour, our professional golfers body, giving me the best news ever. Not only did we get a professional tournament but we received an international event, the European Tour, or as it is called now, the DP World Tour. This event will be broadcasted live for 4 days all over the world, reaching 300 million people globally during the week!” he said.
Pecanwood is hosting the top players of South Africa and also some of the top players of Europe, like Bernd Wiesberger, Chris Wood, Pablo Larrazabal, and many more. A total of 156 players will start the tournament on Thursday, 10 March, and finish on Sunday 13 March 2022.
“The golf course is in magnificent condition and are currently ranked 27th in South Africa. We are very proud of this achievement and to showcase our beautiful estate and surroundings to the world. What makes this event so special is that it is one of the last events on the European schedule to qualify for the Master Tournament in Augusta in April this year, where only the top 50 in the world can participate.”
Apart from the golf, Pecanwood will also host 2 000 spectators and guests per day with some live music events.
Performing the same week, Pecanwood has lined up Jesse Clegg, MiCasa, Prime Circle and Saarkie.
