Police pounce on homeless beggars, drug abusers

Following the Kormorant article last week about the homeless beggars and drug use in Hartbeespoort, police and members of the Hartbeespoort community policing forum conducted an operation in the Melodie area and arrested 10 people for possession of drugs.

“Early on Friday morning, 20 police members conducted a stop and search operation and descended on squatters around the Dreiers area. The squatters and beggars were requested to leave the area as a result of numerous complaints from businesses and residents,” said Romano van der Spuy, chairman of the Hartbeespoort CPF. “In total 10 suspects were arrested for possession of drugs. A big thank you to the members in blue for responding to complaints from the community.”

The beggars were noticeably absent on Friday, but back in full force on Saturday. A business in the area sent Kormorant photos of suspected drug deals going down. Van der Spuy said the police will have regular clamp-downs in the area.
