The Hartbeespoort NSRI is currently regularly called out to assist boats trapped in the hyacinths.
“We have an average of four callouts per weekend to assist boats that got stuck in the hyacinth. The hyacinth is currently dying and there is also a lot of debris and tree stumps trapped underneath the plants. We would advise boaters to avoid driving through the hyacinth, and if you have to, go slow. The plants are currently causing havoc with boat engines,” says Arthur Crewe of the NSRI.
Boaters are urged to store the NSRI Hartbeespoort station number on their phones in the event of an unfortunate incident. Contact them on 082 990 5961.
