Inquest after man jumps off Hartbeespoort Dam wall

Hartbeespoort police have opened an inquest after a 50-year-old man jumped off the Hartbeespoort Dam wall on Saturday.

Police and SRU HiRisk rescue teams recovered the body.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh, an eyewitness saw the man jump off the dam wall around 12:00. The police and rescue services were called and ER24 declared the man dead. Hartbeespoort SRU HiRisk rescue workers assisted to recover the man’s body from the rocks near the tunnel.
Myburgh said the man’s car was later discovered parked near the dam wall. The man comes from Pretoria West.
This follows an incident on Thursday when police and SRU HiRisk members prevented a man from jumping from the same area.
According to Arthur Crewe of SRU HiRisk, their rescue team was called for assistance on the dam wall at around 19:30 on Thursday night. “We found the man on the scene who indicated that he wanted to jump. Police and community members were on the scene and they managed to detain him. He was removed from the scene,” Crewe said.
