At least 15 people died during a gruesome head-on collision between a passenger bus and truck on the M17 Hornsnek road at De Wildt on Friday morning.
According to Tshwane Emergency Services, more than 50 people were injured and some are in a critical condition.
The Thari passenger bus and truck collided around 06:00 near Bundu Inn on the M17. Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson, Charles Mabaso, said multiple people were lying outside the bus while others were trapped inside.
Among the deceased are eight women and seven men.
Emergency workers and law enforcement agencies were on the scene to remove trapped passengers and treat the multiple injured people. “Emergency services were working hard to transport patients to the Kalafong, George Mokhari and Steve Biko Hospitals,” Mabaso said. “We are currently busy with recovery and we are hoping that we won’t find more people when the bus is lifted,” Mabaso said from the scene.
Details of how the accident occurred are still under investigation.
The MMC of community safety, Alderman Grandi Theunissen, said that as much as this was an accident, all road users are requested to always be cautious, drive with care and be patient with each other on the road. He expressed his sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and a speedy recovery to the injured people.
The M17 between the N4 and Rosslyn road will probably be closed most of the day. Motorists are advised to use alternative roads.
