Latest on accident victim

Ulrich Bester

Bester and three colleagues were on their way back to work around 13:00 when they were involved in the accident at the Brits Mall intersection where the traffic lights were faulty.

Bester had to be cut from the wreck and was flown to the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. He was transferred to the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital later that night as he does not have medical aid.

“Milpark wanted R350 000 by Tuesday night and we could not pay it. At Charlotte Maxeke Ulrich waited from about 23:00 to 06:00 the next morning before a doctor saw him,” his brother Daniel said.

His family and the Hartbeespoort Rugby Club scrambled to raise money to have Ulrich transferred to a private hospital this week. He was transferred to the Lenmed Randfontein Hospital on Thursday afternoon. Doctors plan to operate today (Friday).

“Doctors said Ulrich’s neck is broken in two places. He is in pain but conscious and we are trying to keep him positive. Miracles happen and we keep on praying and hoping,” Daniel said.

Ulrich played rugby for the Hartbeespoort Rugby Club and had played for the Leopards and the University of Potchefstroom previously.

Anyone who would like to contribute to Ulrich’s medical costs can pay donations into the following account: Standard Bank, cheque account number 330455567, reference Ulla.
