Police Colonel dies when he smashes into wall

The 54-year-old police officer from Doringkloof, who was stationed at the Silverton police station, crashed into the wall of the La Traviata estate opposite the medical centre with his Mazda Drifter at 19:40. The wall collapsed under the impact and the vehicle came to a standstill approximately 20 metres further.

“He died on impact and his body had to be cut from the wreck by Necsa Fire,” said Hartbeespoort Community Policing Forum spokesperson, Romano van der Spuy.

“According to information the colonel and colleagues were in Hartbeespoort for a fishing competition,” Van der Spuy said.

“According to eye witnesses he skipped the stop street at the R511 crossing and went off the road at the estate. The accident is being investigated.”

A resident in the estate said the broken streetlights are partly to blame for many similar accidents. “It is dark here at night and if someone does not know the area, the sharp turn can easily be missed. We have complained to the municipality numerous times but nothing is done,” he said.
