Various issues were discussed around the impact that that this weed has on the local community ranging from tourism, business, and recreation. A steering committee was formed to look at all the aspects around this crisis and at ways how to solve the hyacinth problem.

The Hartbeespoort Rehabilitation Project Stakeholders Steering Committee had its first meeting last week where the following resolutions were taken:

1. That Nuisance value of hyacinth be our priority.

2. Ad Hoc committee established to investigate the possible projects to clear hyacinth and draft a budget for the projects to enable us to establish a funding model asap.

3. That Frans Ellis represents ARC (Association of Residential Communities, North West Chapter) and will give feedback to the estates on the way forward.

4. That they request that the individuals and estates refrain from taking matters into their own hands, that they rather create a master plan for Hartbeespoort hyacinth removal and present to all stakeholders and community members.

The chairperson of the steering committee is Graeme Peplar. Any suggestions or input can be emailed to [email protected]
