Hartbeespoort’s Dricus du Plessis to defend welterweight championship at Carnival City

Dricus du Plessis

The EFC welterweight title hangs in the balance as two of the organisation’s most thrilling fighters are matched in battle during EFC 59 at Carnival City. Saturday 13 May 2017 sees one of the biggest rivalries in EFC history go down as South Africa’s Dricus du Plessis defends his title against Ireland’s Henry Fadipe and after months of anticipation, the question of who will remain the king of the division will be answered.

Du Plessis captured the ‘cursed’ welterweight strap in 2016 and was scheduled to defend against the Irishman later that year, but the challenger succumbed to injury. Instead of waiting, and in an attempt to become the best pound-for-pound athlete in the organisation, the champion opted to go up a division and went on to successfully compete at middleweight.

Many were offered to fight him but they all declined, and after a year-long break from competition, Fadipe eventually returned to the Hexagon. He came back to meet the only man, besides the champion, who was willing to face him and after an overwhelming victory it was clear; the Irishman was better than ever and he still had nowhere left to go but for gold.

EFC 59 featuring Du Plessis vs Fadipe is presented by BetXchange.com. Tickets are on sale at www.computicket.com, and the five main card bouts will be broadcast live on kwesesports.com (Sub-Saharan Africa), Kwesé Free Sports (Kenya & Rwanda) and live in South Africa on SABC 3 starting at 21:00(CAT).
