Ongoing complaints about tjo-tjo cops

Hanlie van Vuuren, an advocate for Solidarity, told Kormorant of her experience. On Thursday last week, Hanlie was driving toward Hartbeespoort from Johannesburg on the R 511 Hennops road when she was pulled off by a “traffic officer.” “I do not know whether the men in uniform pulling cars off were police officers from one of the stations in the area or whether they were from the Tshwane Metro Police or, perhaps not officers at all,” a concerned Hanlie tells.

“The man who pulled me off leaned right into my car through the window, I could not see his name badge or any indication of which department he was from, but he was wearing a blue shirt like the police uniforms.” She did not take note of the colour of the man’s trousers.

One thing Hanlie does know, is that this man and his colleagues did not have anything set up to measure speed. “Yet they pulled me off and asked where I was going, flying at speeds in excess of 100km/h in an 80km/h zone.” Hanlie says that the man was terribly intimidating and she was not prepared to question him or ask for identification or his calibration certificate for the equipment he was meant to have been using to measure speed.

“Give me your license, I have to fine you, how much do you have” the man asked Hanlie. She told him she has nothing. Again he said “I want to help you, how much do you have?”and again Hanlie declined. A third request, this time for the stipulated amount of R 200 was made by the man, but still Hanlie insisted she has nothing. “He then gave me my license back and told me to go.”

Shortly after Hanlie had posted her experience on Facebook, similar complaints from motorists streamed in. One man reported that officers on the same road had taken away his license and demanded payment to get it back.

Hanlie advises that when pulled off by traffic officers, one should not stop but indicate to them that they can follow you to the nearest police station, should the area and situation look unsafe.

Kormorant contacted the Tshwane Metro Police Department to establish whether the officers are from this department but had not received feedback by deadline.
