Five armed robbers invade home in security complex

Willie and Erna Els were in their kitchen busy having lunch when five armed men, wearing dust masks and gloves entered the house in a security complex in Schubart Street at 12:15.
“I was eating and when I looked up the first man with a pistol was in the door. He grabbed my arm, put the gun to my head and the rest entered. One grabbed my wife and another the domestic worker who was in the adjoining scullery,” Willie told the Kormorant.
“One of the robbers hit me so hard, I fell off the chair and told me they wanted money and they knew we had two safes in the house. I only have an empty one of which I had lost the key in the garage and I told them so. They demanded money. One ripped Elsa’s jewellery from her neck and ears and pulled her bracelets so roughly from her arm that they broke the skin. I said to them I am an old man and do not want to fight. They must just take everything and leave us alone.”
The robbers took them to the bedroom where they tied them up with cellphone charger cords, shoelaces and a belt. “They ransacked the house. They emptied every closet and drawer and chucked everything out. They took all Erna’s jewellery, a laptop, tablet, our cellphones and my firearm before they locked us in the bedroom. When we did not hear them anymore the domestic worker managed to free Erna who untied us.”
Fortunately, the robbers did not see the domestic worker’s cellphone and they could call Willie’s co-workers who had to kick down the door to free them.
It is not known how the robbers entered the security complex, but masking tape was apparently taped over the gate sensors to keep the gates open. This was discovered when a resident enquired about the open gates.
The police are investigating a case of armed house robbery.
