The girl testified that she left school at the age of 15 and moved in with her boyfriend despite the fact that her mother was unhappy and tried to stop her. “I did not want to get up to go to school. It was not for me.”
The 18-year-old, girlfriend of the son of the so called mastermind behind the kidnapping and murders of Anisha (30) and Joey (32) van Niekerk, claims the police gave her a statement to sign that was longer than the one she made and that they did not give her the opportunity to go through it again. She also claims the police tried to force her to confirm statements they made, promising her she would be let go. “They said the women were hanged and shot dead. They also said there was a body by the river.” The girl told the court that the police have no evidence connecting her with the crimes.
Prosecutor Christine Molautsi asked her then why the police would make promises if she had nothing to do with it. She told the court that maybe the police wanted to get the second and eighth accused (the so called mastermind and his 21-year-old wife) into trouble.
The eighth accused’s attorney withdrew from the case on Thursday morning because of “insufficient funds”. An attorney, representing three of the other accused in the case, took over from him.
