Sewage spills threaten health crisis

The pump station at Birdwood.

Repeated requests and pleas to the Madibeng municipality the past three months to urgently address the crisis, seem to fall on deaf ears.
The Birdwood and Ifafi pump stations are overflowing and pipes are diverting the sewage into wetlands and flows into the Hartbeespoort Dam.

“In the Sunway settlement, pumps at the sewerage plant are out of order and sewage spills out of manholes in the street and runs down neighbouring roads and farms. It is feared that boreholes on these properties might already be polluted. The Refentse settlement’s French drain collapsed nine months ago and sewage is running among the houses where children play and residents have to walk,” says Erna Rossouw, Madibeng ward councillor for the area.
“I have been reporting the crisis for months now, but to no avail.’

Kormorant reported earlier this month that sewage have not been reaching the main sewerage plant in Rietfontein and that the sewer line is blocked. Sewage has been overflowing on properties in Birdwood and in some areas even pushed up into toilets.
The Kormorant has supplied the Madibeng municipality with information and photos but by the time of going to press, we once again have not received any comment.
