Brits pupil gets 53 years for murdering school secretary

Esbé Koster

The former pupil who was 16 at the time, and a friend waited for Koster, a secretary at the school, at her car after school on 22 November 2016 and asked her for a lift to town. Along the way, he threatened her with a firearm, stolen from his father, and instructed her to stop. He shot her in the head twice. They left Koster’s body next to the Letlhabile road near Brits and drove her car to his parents’ house. Koster’s body was found later the same day and the two boys were arrested at school the next day.
The teenager pleaded guilty to murder, kidnapping and robbery. He told the court how he stole his father’s firearm from the safe the day before the murder and took it to school in his schoolbag.
“It was an evil deed and reflected the conduct of a hardened criminal,” Judge Bert Bam said in his sentence in the Gauteng High Court. He said that the former pupil planned the murder like a hardened criminal.
His teenage accomplice pleaded not guilty and will go on trial later.
Judge Bam said the teenager’s age was the only thing that saved him from a life imprisonment sentence. Although the teenager is now 18 year old, his identity may not be revealed as he was a minor at the time of the murder.
