It is the 38th South African championships and the first event of its kind in Hartbeespoort.
The championship is all about flying accuracy and competitors have to complete tasks like ‘Hare and Hound’, where a hare balloon is followed and competitors have to achieve a mark or valid track point close to a target displayed by the hare.
Eleven competitors, 10 men and one woman, are currently taking to the sky above the spectacular Skeerpoort valley and majestic Magaliesberg mountains. Participants in this event have doubled since last year. Prizes worth R35 000 are up for grabs and the winner will represent South Africa in 2020 at the World hot air balloon championships.
Local residents are invited to watch this colourful spectacle in the sky early mornings and late afternoons. The last flight will be on Thursday morning.
