Boy (11) dies after being hit by car – road safety to be addressed
An 11-year-old boy died after being hit by a car at Ten Rooms on Van der Hoff Road on Wednesday morning.

Van der Hoff Road has claimed several lives the past months.
The boy was knocked down when crossing the road after getting off a taxi.
The latest casualty has brought the death toll in this area to approximately eight people in recent months and an outcry from communities for action to curb accidents on this busy road.
Madibeng ward councillor Graeme Peplar said the accident rate, especially involving pedestrians, is unacceptable. “I have asked the North West Department of Roads for a meeting in this area to discuss measures to be taken to address the carnage on this road,” Peplar said.
“The ward committee and I are very concerned about the recent accidents and loss of lives on the portion of Van Der Hoff road from Ten-rooms to Sunway. The most recent incident was last week when a scholar died after being struck by a motor vehicle when crossing the road at Ten Rooms!
We have communicated with Madibeng and the North West Department of Public Works and are planning a site inspection this week to find various solutions. The current suggestions are to introduce well-located speed humps and additional road traffic signs warning the vehicles of the presence of pedestrians crossing the road. There is also the probability of a three-way stop at the entrance to Refentse once the upgrading of the internal roads has been completed, a project which commenced last week, Peplar said.
“The northern side of the road is currently a ditch with a river of sewage streaming from Refentse. Thus, pedestrians can’t walk there and must cross the road to walk on the opposite side. This matter needs urgent attention from Madibeng.”
