Burnt body of seven-year-old missing girl found in bushes near Brits

The burnt body of a seven-year-old girl from Letlhabile near Brits was discovered in bushes on Saturday after she went missing from her home two days before.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Aafje Botma, the girl was last seen playing with two 10-year-old boys next to a dam in the area on Thursday, 29 April 2021. “When questioned, the boys said that a man called them to his house and offered them fish. He then told the boys to first go and put on shoes. The boys left the girl with the man and upon their return found his place deserted.”
They reported the incident to the girl’s aunt and the family went to the man’s house to enquire about the girl’s whereabouts. The man told the family that the victim had left with other children. The family reported the missing girl to the police and the community started searching for the girl.
Botma said the girl’s father took the suspect to the police station on Friday, 30 April 2021, where he was questioned and admitted to killing the girl. “He took the police to the area on Saturday where the girl’s burnt body was found in bushes.”
The man was arrested and is expected to appear in the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 3 May 2021, on charges of kidnapping, murder and defeating the ends of justice.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena described the incident as horrendous. He thanked all members of various units who searched tirelessly with the family to find the girl’s body.
