President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Monday evening address the nation on new measures to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus in the country.

“His excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation this evening on the coronavirus pandemic,” Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu tweeted.

He added that he will inform the media and the nation of the time later.

Ramaphosa was expected to make his statement on Sunday evening however this was postponed.

Announcing the postponement at the Union Buildings on Sunday, Mthembu said Ramaphosa’s statement was cancelled because his meeting with the National Command Council had not concluded on time.

Ramaphosa’s meeting with the council was expected to consider if the measures implemented to contain the spread of the virus thus far were sufficient before announcing the new ones.

Last week Ramaphosa met stakeholders such as business, political parties and church leaders for their input.

Mthembu said the current circumstances required the country to work in “unison”.

Presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko appealed for people to stop spreading fake news, adding that no memorandums or “anything” would come from the government until the president spoke.

The latest number of confirmed of Covid-19 virus infections was 274, said the National Institute of Communicable Diseases.
